Obstetric Services

Dr. Stafford has had an interest in delivering babies since he first experienced the thrill of a baby being born during his medical school rotation in obstetrics. While it is true, problems can occur during pregnancy and delivery, he disagrees with the all too common philosophy in contemporary obstetrics that every pregnancy is a disaster waiting to happen. Dr. Stafford believes in emphasizing the normalcy of pregnancy and focusing on the thrill of bringing a new baby into your family, rather than constantly looking for problems. He strives to help the pregnant couple have the kind of birth experience for which they are looking. Since Dr. Stafford is the only doctor in the practice, the pregnant family and Dr. Stafford will get to know each other very well over the course of the pregnancy. While Dr. Stafford cannot guarantee he will be the one delivering the baby, since he takes call 24 hrs/day and 7 days a week, it is extremely rare for him to not be the doctor delivering your baby.

If desired, Dr. Stafford can also be the pediatrician for the new baby so one can maintain care from the same individuals you got to know during the pregnancy.

Dr. Stafford's training and experience: During his family medicine residency Dr. Stafford took extra obstetrical rotations to prepare him for providing obstetrical services in practice. Since then he has continued to deliver babies, both while practicing in New Jersey and now in South Carolina. He currenty delivers approx. 8 babies per month and has delivered over 700 babies during his career. His cesarean section rate is 10-15%.

Obstetrical services provided: Dr. Stafford does low risk vaginal deliveries at Greer Memorial Hospital. He is unable to provide VBAC services or do Cesarean deliveries. Dr. Stafford's back-up is Greer OB and they do Cesarean sections for him when one is needed and cover for him when he is out of the area. Dr. Stafford delivers babies at Greer Memorial Hospital, which is very supportive of a low intervention type of birth experience. He enjoys having doulas as part of the birth team. Delivering at Greer Memorial allows one to have a low intervention style birth, but also keeps available modern obstetrical and pediatric interventions, should the need arise.
